To create this artwork, I cut black paper using a scalpel, so that each doll is cut from a single piece of paper. I then glued coloured paper behind sections, to create highlights, and, finally, I glued the pieces onto a canvas.
Through this artwork, I wanted to demonstrate how a person’s identity is complex and involves many aspects. ‘The Great Puzzle’ reflects my identity. I believe identity contains many layers (Environment, Family, Appearance, Interests and Personality). Some layers can be seen from the outside and others will only be revealed if you know the person well. I decided to use babushka dolls to represent how the layers of identity become more hidden and complex to understand as the babushka doll becomes smaller.
